rear package tray speaker provisions?
Gents,
In the process of ordering a rear package tray and was wondering what the 62 speaker provisions were? I cant remember. Is there just 1 center channel speaker or are there 2?
Thanks!
Chris

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
IIRC there are provisions for a pair of 4x8's or 4x10's back there, very odd sizes, won't be able to get anything with any real good sound quality -- might be some adapters out there from somewhere. I'd have to open up my chassis manual though to be 100% sure. If I have time and think of it Ill check for you tonight.
I decided since I was already cutting the doors for a pair of 6" components that I might as well cut another set in. So I ended up having two pair in each door -- a pair that sit at the front of the door and a pair that sit at the rear of the door. Work'd well for me.

Josh,
Sounds good. I know our cars used a center channel in the front but wasnt sure about the rear. Reason I ask is I am looking to order the package tray and wanted to get it with the speaker provisions already in there.

Yeah, my buddy talked me into it. Couldnt find a clean 68-72 Skylark in my price range and our cars have gorgeous body lines so I figured what the hell.
Gonna finish her up and enjoy!

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
The '63 only had one rear speaker. Is it different from the '62s?
Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
I'm just going off memory ( which has been known to be terrible at times ) so it's entirely possible -- I'll have to check the chassis manual to be 100% sure one way or the other.

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
Pics from today. I have a 6x9 subwoofer mounted in there now. I had to rill some holes for the screws. If I remember correctly, there was some metal that ran down the middle of the opening, so you would not want the rubber surround of the speaker to be butted right up to it.

Bill
So it is in fact one speaker in the center then?
Any idea on original speaker size? Maybe 4x10?

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
Well things have just gotten a little stranger.... my 61 rear deck looks like it would house two speakers and from size best guess is 4 X 8 like I mentioned above and it looks like I need to climb in there a do a little bit of maintenance

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
Keith-
Part of me says your right but then that would mean the hole on the passenger side was the only hole for stock factory speaker? Seems a little fishy to me -- if there was another hole or evidence of some sort of mounting bracket in the middle of the rear deck ( look at Bill's pic ) Id say they were cut in but I don't think that's the case since they are equal distance apart -- with that said I could totally see someone cutting the rear deck before me to put another size or type of speaker ( say 5.25" or 6" rounds ) in its place but Im pretty sure from what I see 1st hand this was for two 4x8's

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
I am not sure why they would have two rear speakers in 61 and go to one in 63. I would bet $10 those were cut after the fact. Thats my guess.
Chris - if memory serves me right it was pretty close to a 6x9 opening, but I left for vacation almost immediately after taking those pics. If the question is not solved by the time I get back, I will remove the speaker and snap a pic of the opening and get a measurement for you. That would be Sunday at the earliest.

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
Then how do u explain the missing "one" in the middle of the rear deck. Im almost certain they are factory holes enlarged for aftermarket speakers. There are mounting provisions on both sides factory stamped in the rear deck. Moco's make bad or unnecessary changes from one model year to the next all the time w/o reason or need. Especially since the 63 is a one off body style wouldn't surprise me in the least.
With that being said I guess it's completely plausible that originally my car came with no rear deck speakers?
This question should be posed on the yahoo group -- Bruce Andren appears to be a concourse judge or something and I'm sure he can lay to rest this question.

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
Just for reference, I took a look in the trunk of my '61 and there are NO cutouts in the package tray at all. It is a solid piece except for two very small triangular cutouts at either corner, presumably for venting the trunk (which makes no sense- who wants to smell the bodies back there? Ummm... forget i said that.).

Re: rear package tray speaker provisions?
I ended up installing two 6x8s in my rear deck. They turned out great too but yeah the mystery is still unsolved on whether there was any factory provisions for a speaker(s). Being mine had two holes already figured it wouldn't be the end of the world to trim them a hair more.
Appreciate the pic though -- seems to lean towards someone cutting my rear deck before I took ownership on the car -- seems plausible being the car is what 56 years old!
And yeah I hate when them corpses start smelling, always seems to gum up the works lol
