Im new to the forum and plan to swap out my Roto5 from my 1962 F85. I primary goal is to keep the stock automatic shifter and console. Im planning to go with the 2004R; had thought about the 700r4 but for the size and I was worried the 215cu was low HP for that tranny. Anyhow I need to get smart on this so I can have an intelligent dialogue with the shop I hired for the project. What are your thoughts about the 2004r vs 700r4. I have sooooo many questions to ask you. first of all did you keep your stick shifter.Did go with an Eddlebroch carb and change out the linkage. What about the DS? did you build a new one or just cut the old one. What about the differential, did you upgrade the gears or update to a posi-traction......A million questions to ask yo. I plan to start this project in February and hope to roll out in the spring. Any advise and suggestions would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks.
C

I haven't done any trans swaps personally for these cars but you could definitely start by contacting Mark @ D & D Fabrications -- he can give you most of the info you're after and provide you with the proper adapter plate as well.

The 215 has plenty of power for the 700r and makes my 62 skylark go pretty good , I have my shift points at 20,40 and 60 and in fourth the car will cruise at 85 mph all day. There is a lot of little things you have to do but well worth it.

Wow! What would be your hesitation with going with a 200R4?....or rather what benefit is there to go with a 7004r vs the 200 R4? I presume that D&D bell housing adapter will fit both tranny's? Also is yours an automatic console on the floor? Did you keep the same shifter?

With the D&D adapter plate you dont need the bell housing you just mount it to the engine , I went with the 700r because you don't need a cumputer if you get a trans in that 87 to 92 year range just a TCI wiring kit which has one wire to fuse box , I am not sure what the 200r needs as far as wiring. Mine is on the column and I left it there for stock look , had to make a new linkage for it but it works great. I was on a tight budget ( retired ) and a 700r is super cheap I did my hole swap for $1,100 , the highest price item was the adapter plate from D&D. Good luck

Old Thread! Installing 200-4r in my 62 Buick Vert. Documenting process. Will be using D&D adapter. The three bolts that secure torque converter to flexplate on dual path are a reduced cross section versus 200/700. Did you adjust pattern on flexplate and have balanced?
