What is the fabric looking material on this timing cover? Is this a replaceable piece and any recommendations on where I find a replacement?
Thanks

You might also consider switching over to a neoprene seal. It's possible with the v6, 350 & 455 so I'd think it's possible in this case too. I'd check with D & D engines ( Michigan ) or TA performance ( Arizona ). I'd think between the two someone would know for sure and be able to set you up with the right seal.

Hi,
My understanding is the original timing cover seal was a “rope” or material type impregnated with graphite, similar to the one fitted at the rear of the crank. The later replacement neoprene seals should work much better but make sure the sealing surface on the pulley is smooth and free of rust or pitting.

Won’t hurt to give it a light rub with some fine wet and dry rub paper soaked with oil to remove anything that could cut or damage the new seal.

And best to use some light grease or Vaseline on both the sealing surfaces when putting back together to give some initial lubrication. And check to make sure it is fitted right way round.

Just my two bobs worth

You might also contact Russ Martin at Centreville Auto Repair. Russ specialises in Nailhead Buick’s ( 364, 401, 425 ) for the senior cars but I understand he may do stuff for the PinHead V8 also. He certainly has good info there. Russ helped me out with a timing cover for my ‘63 Riviera a few years back.
Cheers
