Motor swap question: Want to put 350 Buick in 62 Skylark

Post by reebz on Fri Sep 01, 2017 1:45 pm

Ok I'm new to this web site and 62 Buicks. I had a 70 Skylark for 30 years. I did several motor and transmission replacements in it. I have a solid 62 that I would like to put a Buick 350 in. What is involved????
1. I understand I have to cut the firewall and floor.
2. Will the front end be able to take the added weight without modification?
3. The plan is to make a street strip car.
4. I plan to backhalf the car car and put a cage in it.
Any help you can give me would be great. This is nothing like the 70 Lark.

It's a pretty big job but doable with the car as is from what I've read elsewhere.  Seems you've done some research of your own based on your questions. I don't believe there is anyone HERE whom has actually done the swap yet in stock trim -- some are in mid swap of some degree ( LT1 swap on one thread ) so others may chime in BUT if it were me I'd go the route that RT338B did on his build and just swap the whole chassis out for a modern one.

That will eliminate the majority of your issues, give you a much better platform to build upon, and the parts will likely be more readily available and cheaper too.

Just my 2 cents worth...

Here's RT338B's thread - may help you get some ideas.

Also link to LT1 mid swap thread ( can compare approaches )

Thank you. I will contact the gentleman in the link. I will look it to sub frames as well. I generally research the hell out of everything, this one not so much. Live and learn. I love the body lines, that is what sold me on the car. When the car arrived and I opened the hood I was surprised at how small the motor compartment was especially with the 455 sitting next to it.
