Motor swap question: Want to put 350 Buick in 62 Skylark

Post by reebz on Fri Sep 01, 2017 1:45 pm

Ok I'm new to this web site and 62 Buicks. I had a 70 Skylark for 30 years. I did several motor and transmission replacements in it. I have a solid 62 that I would like to put a Buick 350 in. What is involved????
1. I understand I have to cut the firewall and floor.
2. Will the front end be able to take the added weight without modification?
3. The plan is to make a street strip car.
4. I plan to backhalf the car car and put a cage in it.
Any help you can give me would be great. This is nothing like the 70 Lark.

It's a pretty big job but doable with the car as is from what I've read elsewhere.  Seems you've done some research of your own based on your questions. I don't believe there is anyone HERE whom has actually done the swap yet in stock trim -- some are in mid swap of some degree ( LT1 swap on one thread ) so others may chime in BUT if it were me I'd go the route that RT338B did on his build and just swap the whole chassis out for a modern one.

That will eliminate the majority of your issues, give you a much better platform to build upon, and the parts will likely be more readily available and cheaper too.

Just my 2 cents worth...

Here's RT338B's thread - may help you get some ideas.

Also link to LT1 mid swap thread ( can compare approaches )

Thank you. I will contact the gentleman in the link. I will look it to sub frames as well. I generally research the hell out of everything, this one not so much. Live and learn. I love the body lines, that is what sold me on the car. When the car arrived and I opened the hood I was surprised at how small the motor compartment was especially with the 455 sitting next to it.

I have put a 350 in my stock 62 special. Heater and everything is still intact. Only had to cut the trans tunnel and lower the motor mounts on the cross member.

YoungGun 12 Thanks. I have a bare 350 Buick and some motor mounts from TA I plan to try fit up on Sunday. You said "lower the motor mounts on the cross member". Do you mean these mounts? I only pictured one. Did you have to do anything to the steering arm? I was thinking it may hit to oil pan.

Yeah I had to cut those for height. Are you planning on running the stock hood? The only other thing I had to do to make mine fit was get a 340 pick up tube and a 340 oil pan, so the hump was in the middle. I notched the back of the pan just to make sure the arm would clear. Definitely recommend running solid motor mounts.

Thanks so much. Great help. What trans are you running? I will probably use a Turbo 350

Did the steering box get in the way? I plan to go with a manual box

I used a turbo 350 myself. The gear box wasn't in the way for me, but I'm just running manifolds because of the tight fit

I'm going to do a test fit of the 350 Monday to see if it will bolt up to the stock mounts. Is hood clearance the only issue?

If I remember correctly hood clearance was the only issue
