So did you have the typical rust on these convertibles, like in the quarters just ahead of the wheel wells?

Yes...I painted on por 15 down the doors, rear 1/4 windows, and trunk...also all 4 wheel wells.

That is probably the biggest difference between the Special and Skylark's that I have seen then. The Skylarks are padded cover the complete dash.
