Gen to alternator conversion
My 62 Skylark has had the gen replaced with an alternator but the fabrication of the bracket is not nice at all. I have been told that the alternator bracket from a 63 bolts right in. So either I need that or at least the dimensions and pic of one would be awesome.
Thanks
Thanks

If you find one please post a picture. I'm thinking about moving the alternator to the drivers side and mount the ac compressor on the passenger side to keep the lines short.

Will do but from what I have seen the alternator fits on the passenger side down low.

I responded to your "Wanted" ad in V8buick for the generator BUT the alternator conversion doesn't need any specific yr bracket - when I did mine all I did was source a "F" style bracket from any number of vendors but if you're handy with a welder and like to fab it could be made fairly cheap as well - for me the cost was cheaper than my time...

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
Regal that sounds great, would you have a pic of your installation? With the F bracket what is used for the adjustment and other mount? That would be the easiest to just relocate my generator. Funny that we both bounce between these two forums...the other site is not very active to say the least but maybe because of our year and model??

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
I'll see if I can get some pics tonight - if I remember lol - but as far as IR you just added the "F" bracket to what was already there after generator removal. The adjustment for belt tension was handled exactly as it was for the generator...the install was pretty simple IIRC - think the hardest part was the removal of the external regulator since the wiring in that area is pretty short.
And yeah - the other board doesn't serve our little Ys very well - they are very much entrenched in the 65 and up world of buick V8s.

That would be great Regal because I'm not sure I even have all the brackets for the generator???But I could fab what I'm missing I think!!

That's great thank you. It may take me a while to figure out what I need to do but pic is worth a ton of words for sure. Thanks again.

Just a 2 quick questions, the backend of the F bracket goes where...
and what all came with your F bracket package, from whom .

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
I want to say it bolts to the block somewhere but I'd have to crawl under there to be sure. Only thing that came with the f bracket was the f bracket. It's available from spectre, mr gasket, and many more sources. Don't recall exactly which I ended up with. I know - not a ton of help. I will be changing the oil here hopefully this weekend though and can take a closer peak then while I'm under the car. Maybe get some better pics to boot.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
You could get the alternator in the generator body.
Forget who makes it, expensive, but fits right in with no mods and looks stock.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
I think with the pics I can produce something that should work with the alternator I have and I don't think I have all the original gen brackets anyhow.
And you never know a 63 alternator bracket may come available.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
Yeah I thought about that as well but other than the F bracket and the elimination of the external regulator ( which I think is a good thing ) there are no "mods" really. Just a simple swap.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
I'm interested in some more pictures also might work even though I'm going to try and make it work on the drivers side. The ac compressor on my car sat on drivers side and well I'm going to try and move the aftermarket compressor on the pass. side to keep the lines short.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
I took these two pics while changing the oil tonight. Probably the best I can do sans taking it all apart. Hopefully between these and the ones above you can digest what is required enough to give a crack at it. The only bracket I can't get a good pic on is the one that is basically a twisted pc of tubing with ears at each end to bolt it together. The bracket I'm referring to can partially be seen in the last pic of the 1st group I posted. It's the one that is directly behind the grounding strap.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
That's awesome Regal, I have the two brackets in the last pic!!
And now I can build the F bracket knowing where it goes.
The twisted tubing must just be a piece that secures F bracket to block as well, should be easy to figure once the rest is in place.
I picked up some 3/16"X1" flat bar to build the missing pieces.
This helps big time, you Rock Regal!!!!!

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
Regal need your help again...sorry.
I got all my brackets made and it looked like it was all going to work but ended up being on too much of angle with the belt.
So if possible could you get me the measurement from the exhaust manifold bracket mount to the front of the alternator bracket by the belt of the F bracket? I know that the "U" that holds the alternator is hanging over but mine would be way out there. Thinking maybe the bracket that bolts on around the water pump is not the right one.
The other issue is there is limited room towards the frame on that side of the engine, did you need to alter anything there to have this fit? Close but no cigar!!

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
Are you asking me for the dimensions out to out on the F bracket? Just want to be sure before trying to obtain these as it's pretty tight in and under there.
And no, I did not need to alter anything. It was a direct bolt-in for me. I took the generator out, swapped in the alternator with the F bracket and then put tension on the belt and tightened it all up.

Re: Gen to alternator conversion
Yes total length of F bracket is what I need to make sure other bracket is right.
Great on the "no alterations" this will work!!!!!
Again indebted to you!
What alternator did you use? Mine is an old 10Si, 6" diameter which is obsolete and I'm just wondering now if it is bigger than the one you used?

Ok I'll see what I can't do for ya - I'm really busy right now though - might be tomorrow might be Monday.
Not really sure which case it is but it's a newer style for sure.
