VISOR INSTALLATION

Hey guys!!  Looking for a little help, I just bought a 61 Sky and the gentleman before me had the interior redone including new headliner.  They did not however install the visor mounts or visors that were recovered.  I have them and they look really nice -- Id like to put them back in the car -- what would be the best approach on finding the mounting locations/holes -- Im kinda nervous with the headliner being new and all -- don't want to screw it up! lol  Any tricks or advice would be appreciated.

Yeah I have both the chassis and body manuals, I don't recall seeing anything about the visor removal/installation in either of them but will check again when I get home. I know the PO indicated I would have to cut the head to install the mounts and that of course is what makes me nervous -- I will try to see if I can feel the bolt holes though -- if I can perhaps I can just use an awl to punch through the headliner. Ill report back tonight with my findings!

Ok. I have a small rip in the headliner of my 63. I have poked it a couple of times and it seems like it would be have d to rip. I think you will just have to feel behind it and make an "x" with a razor blade to open it up, if we hat makes sense. Of course, i would feel better if someone else with some experience chimed in.

Are you familiar with the H.A.M.B.? I bet there is an interior person on there that could give you the best answer.

Yep sure am! Ill poke around there too -- I think your previous post may tell me what I need to know though -- are the mount locations in the corners of the windshield somewhere or closer to the center of the windshield?

I will go out to my garage in 30 minutes and let you know.

Those should be a tremendous help!! Im gonna go out there tonight and feel around in the area you speak of and see if I can't get these things up -- Ill report back later tonight!!

Same here.... Mine have the headliner on though. And they are from a '63.

Oh and for the sake of the thread and future readers whom may struggle with this too, here are the pix Keith sent!!

Here's a shot of the pix Bill sent -- seems the mounts are slightly different for a 63 but use the same holes? Hard to tell from pix just what Im observing.

I am glad this works for you. I had a hard time with the yahoo group as far as following what was going on, and thought that a forum might be easier to use. I hope I did not scare anyone off by saying I would switch to a paid site. I meant I would pay for hosting to make things easier. For $10 a month I could host this and five other websites with unlimited storage and bandwidth, but I didn't want to start until I knew people would use this site. I hope no one took it as that I would charge them for posting. I would never charge for it, and I think it would be fun. Plus I want a personal website anyhow, so it was a cost I was going to incur regardless. I would love to see some other folks sign up and start using this site- it is great for things like you did here with threads that someone else could find useful.

Well I had mixed results this evening trying to get the visors installed -- my mounts are definitely different -- Ill take a picture tomorrow in the light so you all can see them -- I did get the DR side visor installed BUT unfortunately there must be more than one hole that would work with mine because after locating it and making my small incision with my razor I fingered around to find the screw holes and couldn't find any!! DOH! I ended up having to drill some so I could mount being there is no turning back after making the cut -- oh well the visor will function as a sunblock for the windshield it just doesn't want to make the 90* turn to be used on the side window. Guess things could be worse and I could have a whole in the new headliner and the visor not functional at all.

So did you just miss the holes then? My mount is a three screw mount. I think I had one pic that I sent you with the visor down. Hope I did not give you any bad advice there. Yikes.

LOL -- no everyone here is good -- my mounts don't look like yours at all though. Additionally, after feeling around some more it seems like there were two holes big enough to accept the rotating portion -- one near the pillar and one bit further away -- I cut the one further away thinking it had to be it but alas Im not sure it was lol -- its not a big deal, visor will function as it should -- im just confused why my mounts look so different anyways again no big deal it looks fine and functions thats all that matters -- this car is a resto mod so Im not shooting for concourse restoration or anything. Ill shoot some pix tomorrow, I don't think unless you're super familiar with these particular cars you'd ever know.

Ok sorry it took so long, got tied up. Here's a pic of the DR side visor installed with what appears to be a 65 vintage visor mount ( found this out lookin through the OPG catalog last night ) -- probably the reason why it only partly operates correct and had to be mounted the way I did. Oh well live and learn. The more I see the less Im upset with the install though -- Ill probably hardly ever use it anyways -- just wanted them in for looks.

Looks good! I like the material that was used for the visor. Did you do that yourself?

How did you get a hold of the '65 visor mounts? They are definitely different than the ones I have.

Tx Bill! The material on the visors is a tweed -- black and grey. Its the same material the PO used to recover all the seats and dash panel with. Looks really nice and ties in well with the rest of the car.

As for the mounts, those were the ones that were sent with the car so I just figured they must've been on it ( maybe they were or maybe its something he acquired ), not sure but will ask him at some point.

And yeah, like I said not upset by any means they look fine and are functional so no biggie -- car isn't a concourse resto so it doesn't really matter.
