Heater core Empty Heater core

Post by keithg Mon Jul 03, 2017 8:04 am

So, driving around Saturday evening and noticed when we stopped for dinner that there were drips coming out of the passenger side heater duct! I removed the core It appears to be leaking from the lower fitting where it is soldered to the core. Maybe repairable. I replaced the ducting with a sheet of aluminum so I can clean and paint the duct and components. No need for the heater in July so I connected the supply hose directly to the intake manifold fitting. Any hints on where to get one if this is not repairable? I searched the internet and could not even find a used one. I'm going to take it to a local place later in the week to see when they can do.

Hopefully somebody will chime in with a source but I wouldn't hold out hope long lol -- I have a heater core in my storage unit that needs repaired as well. Decided that one day I might take it to a rad shop and see what they say BUT I don't ever plan to drive the car when it's cold enuf to warrant the heater anyways so I've settled in nicely without it -- I know from a complete car perspective though that I'd like to see it in as well -- if you come to some resolution ( either new or repaired ) keep me posted as I'm in a very similar boat.

A good radiator shop should be able to re-core your heater core. My dad was in the radiator business through the 70's until about the mid 80's. I worked there as a teenager recoring many heaters.

I agree that they shouldn't haven't a problem re-coring -- problem is finding a core -- when I spoke to the local guy he said that core was abit of a odd ball size -- go figure -- anyways maybe in was just him...

Had to have mine re-cored locally. He also said it was an odd ball but did find a core and it was expensive. It was a while ago but it may been a core they had to modify to fit this application. Polar Radiator in Scotts Valley CA is the shop we use, old time type of shop.

We have an 'old time shop' here in the city of Chicago (still). Cool Heat on Montrose. The 'old guy' there looked in his stash for a core, but was unable to find anything suitable. 320.00 for a new custom core! Ouch. I'll do it next month when I get the CFO to clear it.

Ouch is right! Wish I would've checked with my local "RAD" guy before they closed their doors last year -- oh well don't really plan to drive it when the temps get below 50* anyways or when the need for a defroster might be required. I've yet to need the heat so I think I can live without till I have expendable beans.

Tx for the update Keith! Keep us posted if and when you move forward.
