Convertible Top weatherstrip fit problem-looking for experience

Post by 62cutlassconvert on Fri Jan 27, 2017 9:52 am

I am fitting new weathersrtip to the convertible top frame and am having difficulty with the pieces that are over the doors and wrap the corners of the front bow. The angle and mass of the corner that goes under the front bow seems too big and holds the bow up well off the windshield. The strip that goes side to side on the bow seems too small and barely touches the top of the windshield chrome. I have the original pieces but they are well mashed and hard to tell where the Steel Rubber stuff differs. The side to side piece from Steel Rubber does seem somewhat smaller.

Anyone have experience with this? I am using Steel Rubbers stuff which seems to be the only one available. The top frame is bare.

C'mon, must be someone out here who has installed new weatherstrip on the convertible frame.

They are "on" but not in final position. The fit fine over the windows but the front part that goes over the door and on top of the windshield are the problem. The part in between the windshield and the top bow seems much too large and does not match up with the piece that goes side to side over the windshield. Would really appreciate some pictures of this area showing how far off the windshield top chrome the bow is and what it looks like installed on the front bow from underneath so I can see how you did it. If your's fit with no problem I gotta be doing something wrong.

Thanks very much.

Here's a few pics I hope they help. I never glued on the bow seal yet. I caught in the rain a couple of times with no leaks.

This is how I attach pics. I scroll across the top menu to Host an Image and click, click on select files, find and open/attach your file, click on send all, then click on insert all
This may be wrong but it's close.

Great. Thank you. I will be taking a look at mine at my friends shop where I am working on the car today and possibly come back with a pict or two and more questions.

-So does the sheet metal hold down bracket that goes across the bow (2pcs) hold down the fat rubber piece under the bow in the pict you have labeled "passenger side" or is it free of the hold down bracket?
-One of my concerns is that the fat piece that sits on top of the windshield holds the bow up too high to seal the Bow Seal strip that goes from side to side on the bow. Did you install the side to side piece and if so what did you find?

Here's some pics of my car, no top is installed yet. It seems that the side piece holds the bow up so high off the chrome that the side to side piece barely contacts the chrome.
Does yours sit on the chrome like my pics show?
What did you do about the side to side piece?

So how is the bow weatherstrip held in place? See my picture "Forgot one", that's how the factory strip was held in place and positioned. Have two converts with orig weatherstrip and that how they were attached. As you see it is the opposite "fold" from the side piece whereas you have yours going the same way as the side piece. Makes more sense the way yours is based on the new side piece but then it doesn't slip under the sheet metal strip bracket to hold it in place.

Looks like yours fits down tight on the top stainless when fastened or is that the front roll of the top taking up the room?
See my picture for how far up my bow is when fastened down. Is yours similar?

Mine was also held in place with the metal strip. The new seal does not have the same profile as the original so I used weatherstrip adhesive to glue it down. The hole in the new seal should line up with the factory screw hole on the front side over the top of the metal strip.

Thanks for all the info. From this I get that I'm not crazy and the weatherstrip is not per original and improvisation must be done.
-So you turned it around to match the side weatherstrip profile and glued the bow strip down on top of the metal bracket and new top material?
-Looks like your bow fits down tight on the top stainless when fastened or is that the front trim roll of the top material taking up the room?
-See my picture for how far up my bow is when fastened down. Is yours similar?

The hole in the new side weatherstrip that wraps around to the front bow doesn't line up with the existing hole so I have to drill a new hole in either the weatherstip flange or the metal bow itself. Already two holes in one side.
