old guy with old cars

Post by custom880 on Mon Jan 09, 2017 4:25 pm

Hello,
I've just started on an old 61 special wagon. I originally drove the car home last century to pull the Engine out and put it in a morris minor.  Speed forward next century, got a divorce and the ex got the morris's and parts and I kept the wagon. Now that I'm retired I  decided to build a sedan delivery out of it. The cars rough sat in my weed pile for years along with other projects I bought while working. The floor replacement has been a nightmare but is just about done. Has a few rusted corners and banged up quarters which I'll have to work out, oh and a hood that's pretty messed up.  I thought about trying to find replacement parts only today people (junk yards) are so proud of their parts I'm going to try my best and repair what I can.

The wagon is original down to the bulbs stuck in the taillights. It came with ac and a fancy rack on top. I'd like to do a mild custom and put a 200r4 behind the engine, wish me luck (anyone do this yet?). Some of the chrome was bent on the drivers side do to a large dent under the rear side window, hence sedan delivery and I'm going to de-chrome it if you're needing any, rather swap parts then swap cash.

I've been building cars and harley's since the 70's had a 57 chevy, 48 coupe, real pretty 46 chevy truck that I finished just in time for the ex to get, have 2 panheads and a cast iron sportster. Also working on a 65 dodge custom 880 convertible (gluten for punishment) parts impossible for that also. Have a 52 ford 3/4 ton waiting, 67 formula S cuda and a couple of 40s sedans waiting to be hotroded. Cars that I have up and running are a 73 amx, 73 dodge sport and a 57 chieftain.  Retired military and 37 years of fixing planes.

Guess that's it for now by the way I go by Fred

Welcome to our little site Fred! Hope we can find away to help you through your project!

One thing I noted when reading your intro was you said you replaced the floorpans -- I hate to be the bearer of bad news but if you intend to install any trans other than the auto or manual that came with the car you will likely have to heavily rework the trans tunnel ( and adjacent floors ) to make them fit. Just something to consider.

Additionally, take a look at this member's 62 wagon -- its a DREAM!! It might give you some inspiration for your own project.

Once again, welcome!

Thanks for the hellos,
I saw the wagon made into a 2 door it's very nice. I actually thought about doing the same thing only finding a donor car much less any good parts is almost impossible, at least for me. As for the floorboards I wanted to get some integrity back into the car before hacking it up some more. If anyone has gone the 200r4 route would enjoy chatting with them.
